Tattoo aftercare: 8 essential tips for proper healing

Getting a new tattoo is an exciting experience, but the journey doesn’t end when you leave the studio.
Proper aftercare is crucial for ensuring your tattoo heals correctly and maintains its vibrant appearance.
As a professional tattoo artist with over two decades of experience, I’ve seen firsthand how aftercare can make or break a tattoo.

Here are some essential tips to help you care for your new ink.

1. Keep it clean

Immediately after getting your tattoo, your artist will cover it with a sterile bandage or wrap. Leave this on for the recommended time – usually 2-4 hours. After removing the bandage, gently wash the area with lukewarm water and an unscented, antibacterial soap. Pat dry with a clean, soft towel. Repeat this process 2-3 times a day for the first week.

2. Moisturize, but don’t over-moisturize

After cleaning, apply a thin layer of fragrance-free, hypoallergenic moisturizer. This helps prevent scabbing and keeps the skin hydrated. However, avoid over-moisturizing, as this can clog pores and increase the risk of infection. A little goes a long way.

3. Avoid direct sunlight and water

For at least two weeks, keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight and avoid soaking it in water. This means no swimming, no long baths, and no saunas. When showering, try to avoid letting water directly hit the tattoo for prolonged periods.

4. Don’t pick or scratch

As your tattoo heals, it will likely itch and possibly peel. Resist the urge to scratch or pick at it. This can remove ink and lead to scarring. If the itching becomes unbearable, gently pat the area or apply a cold compress.
5. Wear loose, breathable clothing
Tight clothing can rub against your new tattoo, causing irritation and potentially pulling out ink. Opt for loose, breathable fabrics that won’t stick to the tattoo.
6. Be patient
Complete healing typically takes 4-6 weeks, though larger or more detailed tattoos may take longer. During this time, your tattoo may look dull or cloudy – this is normal. The true vibrancy of your tattoo will reveal itself once healing is complete.
7. Watch for signs of infection

While rare with proper care, infections can occur. Signs include excessive redness, swelling, heat, or pus-like discharge. If you notice these symptoms or develop a fever, consult a healthcare professional immediately.

8. Long-term care

Once your tattoo is fully healed, protect it from sun damage by applying 30-50 SPF sunscreen when exposed to sunlight. This will help prevent fading and keep your tattoo looking fresh for years to come.
Remember, these are general guidelines. Always follow the specific instructions provided by your tattoo artist, as they may have additional recommendations based on their techniques and the specifics of your tattoo.
By following these aftercare tips, you’re not just caring for a wound – you’re preserving a work of art. Your tattoo is an investment in self-expression, and proper aftercare ensures that it will remain a beautiful part of you for years to come.
