Your daily screen time isn’t just damaging your eyes, but several aspects of well-being including skin health.
Blue light from computer screens and mobiles can lead to skin ageing, contributing to hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles.
Avoiding screens isn’t always possible in today’s age, but we can certainly take measures to prevent skin from the harmful effects of blue light.

According to a 2018 study published in Journal of Biomedical Physics & Engineering, exposure to blue light for even an hour can cause reactive oxygen species (ROS) – linked to premature aging in the skin.

What is blue light?

As per University of California – Davis Health, blue light is part of the visible light spectrum – what the human eye can see. Vibrating within the 380 to 500 nanometer range, it has the shortest wavelength and highest energy.

Natural remedies to reverse skin ageing from screen

1. Sleep well

If you aren’t sleeping well, your skin barrier may take more time to recover. This can lead to water loss and skin becoming more vulnerable to environmental factors. A 2015 study published in Clinical and Experimental Dermatology found that lack of sleep could lower skin barrier recovery. Get 7-8 hours of good quality sleep to avoid premature skin-ageing.

2. Switch off all devices in the night

If you are someone who spends too much time on screen working, you must make sure to switch off all electronic devices a few hours before sleep to reduce blue-light exposure. This will not only improve your sleep quality, but also protect your skin from long-term damage.

3. Use a sunscreen

Sunscreen with iron oxide can offer protection against blue light. It is also recommended to use vitamin C serum, which can prevent your from environmental damage. Antioxidants, such as vitamin C, can also help reverse effects of free oxygen radicals formed due to blue light exposure.

4. Face masks

Use masks with ingredients like honey, aloe vera, or yogurt to deeply hydrate and nourish your skin. You can also place cucumber slices on your eyes to reduce dark circles and soothe tired eyes. Soaked tea bags can also be placed over the eyes to reduce puffiness.

Eating a nutrient-dense diet including dark green leafy vegetables like spinach, nuts and seeds, and antioxidant-rich fruits can help fight free radicals and enhance your skin health.
