David Kau laments about the zero recognition being given to South African comedians by the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture.
Taking to Twitter the comedian penned an open statement to Minister Gayton McKenzie, requesting a one-on-one meeting with him for the sake of the comedy industry.
“Do we have to be in the Olympics or die before we Stand up Comedians can meet you @GaytonMcK? We know we’re not recognized or there’s no category for us although we have employed hundreds of people without any government Assisstance but would appreciate a meeting please. Please advice who to contact to have a meeting with you. I will go on a run walk with you and spin cars – whatever it takes,” David wrote.
The comedian further revealed that he’s spent his money on things the government ought to do.
He also lamented about the challenges faced by most comedians when looking for sponsorship.
“I would love to engage you all but the Minister or his spokesperson and department will reply. Minister Zizi met with everyone in art n culture except the Comedy sector.”
“We’ve been and I use ‘We’ lightly, those who know know. We know this comedy industry is here purely based on skill and ordinary South Africans buying tickets. Even corporate sponsorship for comedy doesn’t develop any talent, some of the sponsors pick and choose what they like based on their brands, not based on talent development.”
“I’ve already spent my money doing what government does for most Sports and Culture codes, if you don’t understand that that’s also ok,” he wrote.
