South Africans are buzzing on social media after Minister Gayton McKenzie was seen promoting Amapiano music to world leaders during a recent visit to Russia.
In a video, McKenzie enthusiastically introduced the popular South African music genre to an international audience, bragging about how it bagged a Grammy win.
“I promote Amapiano music amongst the 42 Ministers and leaders of different countries in Russia,” Gayton captioned the video.
Some viewers praised the minister for using the opportunity to showcase South African culture on a global stage, highlighting Amapiano’s influence as one of the country’s biggest cultural exports. Others found the moment inappropriate, as they reminded him of pressing issues in the country.
“Gayton Keeps Embarrassing us on the world stages. This man must shut up sometimes,” a tweep wrote.
“The only minister who works hard, the only minister we recognize at the moment, and the only minister who understands the people and works for them selflessly,” another wrote.
