In the video, the actress refers to Durban, her hometown, as a “small town,” which many South Africans find offensive.
Critics have accused her of misrepresenting South Africa and downplaying the significance of Durban, one of the country’s largest cities.
Twitter users expressed disappointment, with many saying she missed an opportunity to properly showcase Durban’s rich culture and importance.
These reactions positioned Nomzamo at the top of Twitter’s trend list.
“Nomzamo Mbatha is true definition of beauty without brains,” Chris Excel wrote.
“In her excitement and eagerness to please Americans, Nomzamo Mbatha forgot to be patriotic and dissed one of Africa’s top cities, Durban, her own hometown, and called it a small town. Why do South Africans forget to be South Africans in America? This trend is starting to irritate me. She’s acting like a sellout now,” another Twitter user wrote.
