Lucas Moripe is dead

South African football legend Lucas “Masterpieces” Moripe, a standout player of the 1970s, has passed away at his home in Atteridgeville, Pretoria.

Mamelodi Sundowns paid tribute to Moripe, affectionately known as Modimo Wa Bolo (Football God), praising him as one of the greatest talents in South African football history.

“Masterpieces lived for football and was a consistent presence at Sundowns matches in Atteridgeville at the stadium named after him,” the club stated.

Supersport United also expressed their condolences, remembering him as a football icon and extending sympathy to his family and the football community.

Honored in 2010 with the renaming of Pretoria’s Super Stadium to Lucas Moripe Stadium, Moripe remained a regular at matches despite being wheelchair-bound after a stroke.

A celebrated player of his era, he won the National Professional Soccer League Player of the Year award in 1973 and briefly played for Caroline Hill in Hong Kong.

His legacy as the “God of Football” will be remembered by fans and peers alike.
