It’s time to put your washing machine to use. Well, if you are thinking, ‘But we do use our washing machine’, think again.
Don’t you complain about scrubbing other household items? No, your washing machine is not only meant for your clothes and bedding, it can do more.
Here are five unexpected items you can safely clean in your washing machine.
1. Shower curtains
How often do you clean your shower curtains? No, your shower curtain doesn’t clean by itself. Though it gets wet, when you take a bath, you need to clean it very often. ‘Often’ means once in a much. Nylon or coated cotton curtains are machine washable. You can pre-soak in baking soda and vinegar to remove grime. You can throw in a towel while washing for a scrubbing effect.

2. Backpacks

Don’t be surprised. You can certainly wash your backpacks in the washing machine. When you use backpacks, it accumulates dirt, crumbs, and odours. Prior to washing the backpacks, empty them completely, by turning them inside out, and shaking away the debris. You can use a laundry bag if the backpack is delicate. Wash on a gentle cycle with mild detergent. You can either use warm or cold water. Put a towel inside to maintain shape, and air dry.
3. Pet collars
You need to wash your pet collars often, as they can trap odours and bacteria. Fabric collars are machine washable. Before throwing them in the washing machine, brush off the loose dirt. Focus on the buckles and clasps. You can wash the pet collars in a gentle cycle using warm water, and natural disinfectants like vinegar or baking soda. Air dry it completely.
4. Reusable bags
Reusable shopping bags are sustainable, so it’s best to wash and use them multiple times. Your grocery bag is a breeding ground for bacteria, especially when you carry food items like fresh produce, raw meat, and dairy. You can machine wash them by turning them inside out. Go for a hot cycle with a mild detergent.

5. Yoga mats

If your yoga mat care permits, you can machine wash them in cold water, over a gentle cycle. Use a mild detergent. Also, avoid fabric softeners and harsh chemicals. Adding white vinegar to the rinse cycle will neutralize the odours and bacteria. Air dry or dry in the sun.
