Soulistic agency dragged to court for debt of over half a million rand

Soulistic Agency, owned by the family of Grammy-winning producer DJ Black Coffee, is facing legal action at the Johannesburg High Court over an outstanding debt of more than R500,000.

The case, brought by Sunlyn Limited and Sasfin Bank, names Black Coffee’s son, Esona Tyolo, and the agency as respondents.

According to court documents, the dispute stems from a “master agreement of hire” signed on August 16, 2022, between Soulistic Agency and CopyStar.

Under the agreement, the agency leased a 20kVA 3-phase diesel generator for 60 months at a monthly rental fee of R7,351. Payments were due from September 25, 2022, but the agency allegedly defaulted on January 25, 2024.

“The first defendant agreed that the agreement applied only to hiring of goods, which the first defendant accepted ‘as is, and that the rental does not include any payment in respect of licensing, service, or maintenance’,” the court papers state.

Tyolo, who signed a guarantee making him liable for the payments, is accused of failing to settle the outstanding balance. The plaintiffs are now seeking immediate payment of R504,074.01.

“Wherefore the second plaintiff, alternatively the first plaintiff, claims from the first and second defendants, jointly and severally, the one paying the other to be absolved, for termination of the agreement, payment of the sum of R504,074.01,” the documents read.
