Former Bafana Bafana star Benni McCarthy has officially been named the head coach of Kenya’s men’s national football team, Harambee Stars.

The Kenyan Football Federation (FKF) unveiled McCarthy and his technical team at a grand event, confirming his appointment.

McCarthy, the only South African to have lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy—under the legendary Jose Mourinho at Porto in 2004—expressed his excitement about the new challenge.

“I am delighted to be here, and I’m proud to have taken this challenge with a national team that has a lot of potential,” he said.

FKF President Hussein Mohammed highlighted McCarthy’s impressive credentials, noting his coaching experience with AmaZulu and Manchester United.

“This is what the country needs. I know the young people of our country are excited about this appointment,” Mohammed said.

Joining McCarthy’s coaching staff are fellow South Africans: Moeneeb Josephs as goalkeeper coach, analyst Pilela Maposa, and Vasili Manousakis, who previously worked with McCarthy at AmaZulu.

With a two-year contract in place, McCarthy’s tenure will be crucial as Kenya prepares to co-host the 2027 AFCON with Uganda and Tanzania.
