Actress Nambitha Mpumlwana
Veteran actress Nambitha Mpumlwana, known for her roles in Generations and Soft Life, reportedly found herself in legal trouble after an alleged shoplifting incident at Dis-Chem in Ferndale Mall, Randburg.
Sources reveal that the actress was taken into custody last week after store security accused her of attempting to leave without paying for a lipstick valued at R160.
Law enforcement was alerted by the store’s management, and upon their arrival, they identified the suspect as Mpumlwana.
While the actress has acknowledged the incident, she insists that it was a misunderstanding.
“It was just a mix-up,” she stated, requesting that any media inquiries be submitted in writing for an official response.
Following her arrest, Mpumlwana was taken to the Randburg Police Station and later released on R1,000 bail.
She appeared before the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on March 20 but did not enter a plea. The case has been postponed to May 2, when she is expected to do so.
A police officer familiar with the situation noted that while cases of this nature are often resolved with a warning or alternative measures, the store chose to proceed with legal action.
“They likely wanted to make an example of the situation and show that no one is above the law,” the officer commented.
The incident has since sparked mixed reactions, with some arguing that public figures should not receive special treatment, while others question whether the situation warranted an arrest.
As the legal process unfolds, Mpumlwana’s supporters and the general public await further developments.
