DJ Maphorisa demanded to make refund after a no-show
DJ Maphorisa is facing backlash after fans were left disappointed when he failed to appear at the Phola Sundays Easter edition held at Scotch and Sofa in Daveyton.
The event, which drew thousands of eager attendees, had billed Maphorisa—real name Themba Sekowe—as one of its headline acts.
Event organiser Zwelakhe Masango says he did everything possible to accommodate the star, including multiple adjustments to the performance schedule, but Maphorisa still did not show up.
“DJ Maphorisa dented my brand with his antics. Now people will never trust me in events I hope to host,” he said.
Masango revealed that this wasn’t the first time the DJ had failed to honour a gig in the area.
He alleged that a similar incident occurred in March.
“All the talks were successful before the event and transactions made to him, and he released his gig guide with our event on it. But what he did on Sunday, I might not recover from it. He has killed my brand,” he continued.
“We’ve engaged with his team for clarity and they agreed to issue a statement but the damage has been done — we want our refund.”
Phola Sundays organisers also released a statement, expressing disappointment and apologizing to fans:
“It was with sadness and heartbreaking when DJ Maphorisa did not show up as he was one of the main reasons people had paid for tickets to the event. We tried our best to communicate on the day but him not showing up was out of our hands and control.”
They added that a formal explanation from Maphorisa and his team is crucial to help restore faith in their brand.
“A statement from him will liberate us as a brand and we will try to do better than this event.”
Despite the disappointment, Phola Sundays thanked fans and sponsors for their support, promising to do their best to rebuild trust and deliver on future events.
