Musa Khawula denied bail

Controversial blogger and social media personality Musa Khawula will remain behind bars after the Fochville District Court denied him bail on Tuesday, 22 April 2025.

Known online as the self-styled “Pope of Pop Culture,” Khawula was arrested earlier this year and is facing multiple charges, including cyberbullying and attempted murder.

His latest court appearance ended on a serious note, despite his playful demeanor in the dock.

Khawula reportedly blew kisses at cameras and appeared in high spirits, a display that didn’t sit well with the magistrate.

According to Daily Sun, Magistrate Bester emphasized Khawula’s erratic behavior, his disregard for legal proceedings, and multiple pending cases as reasons for the bail denial.

“The applicant shows a complete disregard for the rule of the law. He failed to attend court dates and did not communicate with his lawyer,” the magistrate said.

“There is a likelihood that, if released, the applicant will commit a Schedule One offence, and therefore the application to be released on bail was dismissed.”

Khawula’s attempted murder charge stems from a 2021 incident near Mponeng Mine, where he allegedly hit a person with a vehicle.

He is also facing a similar case in Cape Town, adding to the growing list of legal woes.

Online, South Africans reacted with a mix of shock and sympathy.

Some questioned why Khawula remained incarcerated while others accused of more serious crimes were granted bail.

However, the court held firm in its stance, referencing his past behavior and the seriousness of the charges.

Despite public debate, the court’s decision suggests that Khawula’s online infamy won’t shield him from facing the consequences of his offline actions.
