Rising singer Captain dragged for copying Mampintsha
Afrotainment’s latest signee, Captain, is facing backlash from Durban’s entertainment scene over claims that he’s imitating the late Big Nuz star, Mampintsha.
Known offstage as Siphamandla Mathebula, Captain made his debut with the track Cinderella featuring Danger.
Many in the local music industry, including fans and insiders, believe Captain is deliberately adopting Mampintsha’s signature style, from his flow and dance moves to his fashion sense.
The comparisons have triggered a wave of disapproval, with video clips surfacing online showing Babes Wodumo, Mampintsha’s widow, visibly upset over Captain’s rise.
A source linked to West Ink, the label Mampintsha founded, claimed that Captain is seen by some as an “industry plant” positioned to revive Big Nuz’s legacy.
“Captain used to be Mampintsha’s driver. It is evident he studied Mampintsha’s flow, dance moves and dress code. All his years working as Mampintsha’s driver he was envying the guy. A lot of people are angry, not only Babes Wodumo,” the source shared.
Another insider revealed that Captain’s collaboration with Danger was originally intended to be the launchpad for a Big Nuz comeback.
“Captain’s collaboration with Danger was going to be a gateway for Big Nuz’s comeback, but their plan has gone up in flames. It might be the beginning of the end for him as he was aiming for the mega prize, which was ending up being on Big Nuz’s album sleeve,” the source added.
