Tyla surprises Mollwane Madiba at his Matric Dance

South African social media was set alight after Tyla stunned fans by keeping a heartwarming promise, showing up as a date to a young fan’s matric dance.

Mollwane Madiba, who had been publicly campaigning for months to get the Grammy Award-winning singer to accompany him, finally saw his dream come true on 27 June 2025.


The young man, who happens to be the son of Princess Tirelo Molotlegi of the Royal Bafokeng Nation, had turned what began as light-hearted school banter into a viral campaign.

“It was a joke at school,” he revealed during a 5FM interview. “My friends asked, ‘Who are you taking? Is it gonna be Tyla?’ So we decided to make a video. It wasn’t serious at first, but it eventually went crazy in 24 hours.”

As the hashtag “Mollwane and Tyla for MD” gained momentum online, even teachers and radio stations got involved.

While many believed the story had reached its peak when Mollwane showed up at the dance with a life-sized cutout of Tyla, allegedly gifted by YFM.

In a jaw-dropping twist, actual footage from the event began circulating online, showing Tyla herself walking beside Mollwane and posing for photos.

One viral post from user @its_okuhleyyyy captured the crowd’s disbelief as the singer made her appearance, making what was already a special night truly unforgettable.

As the moment continues to trend, one user summed up the sentiment perfectly: “That chap who got Tyla to be his date to his matric dance is a clear indicator that trying is never a bad thing in life. The biggest mistake you can do is not try, the answer will always be no if you don’t try.”
