Mawhoo claims her power as Spotify’s EQUAL Africa Ambassador
Mawhoo has been unveiled as Spotify’s EQUAL Africa Ambassador for July 2025.
Born Thandeka Ngema, the singer first captured attention back in 2018 with her breakout single Umshado, and she’s spent the years since carving out a lane that’s entirely her own.
Fast forward to today, and she stands tall among the genre’s most commanding female forces, blending vocal talent with fierce authenticity.
Her recognition by Spotify under the EQUAL Africa banner signals more than just a career milestone.
While the title brings prestige, Mawhoo’s real power lies in how she’s reclaimed her voice, both creatively and personally.
“There was a time when people made me do music and sounds that didn’t speak to me. I couldn’t express myself fully,” she revealed.
She added: “People assumed I couldn’t sing. I was bullied. But instead of quitting, I pushed myself harder.”
That perseverance has paid off, today, Mawhoo calls the shots, not only in the studio but in every space she walks into.
“I’ve empowered myself. I make decisions that feel right to me. I walk away from spaces that don’t serve me, if it makes me uncomfortable, I don’t do it.”
Her rise isn’t just about hits or streaming numbers, it’s about owning your identity, setting boundaries, and demanding respect.
“As women, learn to stand your ground and say no. Don’t sell your soul just to please others. Teach people to respect you and your decisions,” she said.
