Nationwide protests erupt in support of Mkhwanazi as calls for SAPS reform intensify

Momentum is building across South Africa in support of KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, as protests demanding justice, accountability, and an end to political interference within the SAPS continue to gain traction.

After a powerful turnout in Johannesburg earlier this week, fresh demonstrations took over Durban today, with large crowds chanting “Hands Off Mkhwanazi.”

The public outcry follows Mkhwanazi’s explosive claims of political meddling and criminal elements embedded within law enforcement structures.

Marches have drawn a wide range of supporters, from MK Party veterans and civil society organisations to concerned citizens, all rallying behind the commissioner, who many now see as a whistleblower exposing deep-rooted issues in the police service.

Organisers say growing anger is directed at senior SAPS officials and government inaction, with frustration escalating as silence from leadership continues.

A larger demonstration is already in motion, with plans to descend on Pretoria this Friday.

Among the key demands from protesters are the removal of compromised officials, reinstatement of previously disbanded task teams, and urgent protection for whistleblowers like Mkhwanazi who are risking their careers and safety to speak out.
