Four suspects arrested in DJ Sumbody’s murder
Nearly two years after the shocking murder of DJ Sumbody, real name Oupa Sefako, police have made a major breakthrough with the arrest of four suspects believed to be linked to his killing.
The men, aged between 45 and 60, were taken into custody earlier this week and have since appeared at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court.
National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed the arrests and revealed chilling details tying the suspects to other violent crimes.
According to Mathe, the firearm used to assassinate DJ Sumbody was also connected to the murder of Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart and the attempted killing of actress and influencer Tebogo Thobejane.
“The three hitmen and alleged mastermind are facing three counts of murder; these charges include the murder of DJ Sumbody and his two bodyguards, Sibusiso Mokoena and Sandile Myeza,” said Mathe.
The artist and his bodyguards were gunned down on November 20, 2022, while driving through Sandton.
The attack, which occurred at the corner of Woodmead and Woodland drives, sent shockwaves across the country and left fans reeling.
Following the recent developments, DJ Sumbody’s family issued a statement through the Be a Sumbody Foundation, acknowledging the arrests and thanking the public and police for their support.
“We extend our deepest gratitude to the South African Police Service, particularly the Gauteng organised crime unit and the political task team, for their relentless efforts in pursuing justice,” the family said.
While they welcomed the progress, the family noted that this moment also reopens painful wounds.
“We ask for privacy and space as we process this emotional development. It is a crucial step towards justice, but also a reminder of the trauma we continue to endure.”
Expressing appreciation to supporters, they added: “We also wish to thank South Africans, patriots, and supporters of DJ Sumbody and the foundation for their unwavering love, prayers, and solidarity. Your continued support has been a source of strength for the family.”
Magistrate Renier Boshoff postponed the case to July 29, with all four suspects remaining in custody as investigations continue.
