Tired of spam calls? Here’s how to block them

We’ve all been there — your phone rings, you check the number, and it’s one you don’t recognize.

You answer… and it’s someone offering a “free cruise” or asking about your car’s “extended warranty.”

If you’re sick of spam calls interrupting your day, you’re not alone.

Here’s how you can shut them down — and take back control of your phone.

1. Silence unknown callers (Let your phone work for you)

Your phone has built-in tools that can help — no extra apps needed.

iPhone users:

  • Head to Settings > Phone > Silence Unknown Callers
This sends calls from unknown numbers straight to voicemail. You’ll still get voicemails — just no interruptions.

Android users:

  • Go to your Phone app > Settings > Blocked numbers

  • You can block specific numbers or enable Caller ID & spam protection (name might vary by device).

2. Download a call-blocking app (They work wonders)

If spam calls are still slipping through, a good app can help identify and block them.

Popular options:

  • Hiya – Simple and effective.

  • Truecaller – A community-powered spam fighter.

  • RoboKiller – Even replies to spam calls with bots (funny and effective).

  • Nomorobo – Great for both mobile and landlines.

Most of these apps have free versions, or you can pay for advanced features.

3. Add yourself to the national do not call list

It’s free and it helps reduce telemarketing calls over time.

It won’t stop all spam calls, but it’s a solid step.

4. Use your carrier’s free spam protection

Your mobile provider might already offer tools to block scammy calls:

  • AT&T: Call Protect

  • Verizon: Call Filter

  • T-Mobile: Scam Shield

These services flag or block suspected spam calls before your phone even rings.

5. Don’t engage with spam callers — ever

If you do pick up and hear a robotic voice or a sketchy offer:

  • Don’t press any buttons.

  • Don’t speak.

  • Hang up immediately.

Why? Because even just pressing a number tells the system your number is real — and you’ll likely get more calls.

No one likes being interrupted by robocalls or scammers. Thankfully, with a mix of your phone’s built-in settings, a good app, and a few smart habits, you can seriously cut down on spam.
