Actor Mahlatse shuts down rumours about his sexuality

Skeem Saam actor Mahlatse Moropo has broken his silence after his sexuality became the subject of online speculation following the Basadi in Music Awards earlier this month.

Moropo, who portrays Letetswe Kunutu on the hit SABC1 drama, is also a dancer, choreographer, and voice-over artist.

Speaking in an upcoming episode of Sunday World Engage, the Limpopo-born star made it clear that the rumours about him are untrue.

“No, no, no, no, I am not gay,” he stated firmly.

The conversation began after Moropo stepped out in eye-catching red-carpet outfits that sparked debate around masculinity, self-expression, and fashion in African culture.

While aware of the chatter, the actor said he refuses to let it bother him.

“I’ve learnt not to care about what the next person says. I am a never-mind type of person. If it doesn’t bring me money, I don’t care,” he explained.

“If you give attention to what people are saying, you will die mentally. Some people have even [taken their own lives] because of social media. I do my own thing, I live my life, I am a creative, and I don’t owe anyone explanations.”

Moropo revealed that he has declined invitations to appear on podcasts to address the speculation, saying doing so would only give people control over his narrative.

“That would be giving people the power to control me into admitting something I’m not. I don’t see the need,” he said.

The actor also shared that his partner has been supportive throughout. “I was speaking to my partner, and she asked how I felt about the comments.

And I told her, ‘absolutely nothing.’ I did all of that intentionally, right down to the outfits. I went with the drama,” he laughed.

Despite criticism, Moropo insists he won’t tone down his creativity or bold fashion choices.

“I live my life. I’m not here to explain myself,” he concluded.
