Legendary actress Nandi Nyembe dies at 75
South Africa is in mourning following the death of veteran actress Nandi Nyembe, a beloved star whose career spanned decades and left an indelible mark on television and theatre.
Nyembe, remembered for her powerful performances in productions such as Yizo Yizo, Isibaya, Adulting and Soul City, passed away at her home on Saturday, 23 August 2025, at the age of 75.
Her family confirmed the news in a joint statement with the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, describing her as “one of South Africa’s most treasured icons of the arts.”
The statement read: “It is with profound sorrow that the Nyembe family, together with the National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, announce the passing of Mam’ Nandi Nyembe.”
Her grandson, Jabulani Nyembe, expressed the family’s heartbreak while thanking South Africans for the love and support during this painful time.
Tributes have since flooded social media, with many fans and colleagues describing her as a giant of the industry whose impact will live on forever.
Entertainment commentator Phil Mphela also shared the news online, prompting an outpouring of grief across the country.
“The loss of a giant will be felt far beyond what we can see or explain,” wrote @actorspaces. Nandi Nyembe’s contribution is imprinted in our theatres, sets, and books… We stand in applause for your final curtain call.”
Others echoed similar sentiments, with one user writing, “This woman raised us. May her wonderful soul rest in peace.”
Another added, “I first saw her on Soul City. She was a true legend. Rest in peace, Mama.”
