Sizwe Dhlomo sparks debate with his pick of greatest SA albums of the past 30 years

Radio and TV personality Sizwe Dhlomo has set social media abuzz after sharing his list of what he considers the greatest South African albums released over the last three decades.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Sizwe highlighted four albums that, in his view, stand out as defining works:

  • Thandiswa Mazwai – Zabalaza
  • TKZee – Halloween
  • TearGas – Dark Or Blue
  • Kabza De Small – KOA II Part 1

His post quickly drew mixed reactions, with many agreeing with his selection while others felt the list left out some legendary contributions.

Veteran broadcaster Penny Lebyane weighed in, suggesting additions such as Moses Taiwa Molelekwa’s Genes and Spirit and Judith Sephuma’s A Cry, A Smile, A Dance.

Another user argued that Hugh Masekela’s Black to the Future deserved a place on the list, writing: “But without Hugh Masekela Black to the Future album your list is incomplete, Sizwe. All of them combined, they bow to this album.”

Others took a more diplomatic stance, noting that such lists will always be subjective.

One user commented: “What we are missing in the comments is that everyone has their own preferences. Yes ke, others will put some facts depending on sales and whatever, but still, greatest will always be debatable.”
