‘Shaka iLemba’ renewed for season 3

Shaka iLembe’s groundbreaking journey will officially conclude with its third season, MultiChoice has confirmed.

The historical drama, which has captivated audiences across Africa and beyond, will return in 2026 for what producers describe as the “final, thunderous act” of Shaka’s reign.

The epic series, produced by Bomb! Productions, has followed the extraordinary life of King Shaka (played by Lemogang Tsipa), from his early struggles to his rise as one of the most formidable leaders in African history.

Season two wrapped up last night, closing a defining chapter and preparing the stage for his ultimate test of power, loyalty and legacy.

The upcoming season promises high-stakes drama, opening with Shaka hosting the grandest Ijadu celebration in Zulu history, a spectacle of music, dance and political theatre.

But amid the glory, an assassin’s spear pierces royal blood, unleashing suspicion and paranoia within his court.

Shaka’s rule becomes increasingly ruthless as betrayals threaten from both within and beyond his kingdom.

A campaign against the Mpondo tribe intensifies the pressure, while Queen Nandi carries a secret with devastating consequences.

Viewers can also expect the arrival of Francis Fynn and the British, whose request to settle at Port Natal foreshadows the looming shadow of colonial ambition.

Alongside these political shifts, two love stories emerge, Mzilikazi embarks on unexpected adventures, and enemies circle ever closer to Shaka’s throne.

MultiChoice has described Shaka iLembe as “a love letter to South Africa’s land and people,” paying tribute to KwaZulu-Natal, the birthplace of the Zulu empire.

“When we announced the first season, we were confident that Shaka iLembe would set a new standard for African storytelling, and while we hoped audiences would embrace it, the response has far exceeded our expectations,” said Nomsa Philiso, CEO of General Entertainment at MultiChoice.

“More than speaking to the heritage of the Zulu Nation, it took the story of a dynasty created from scratch by one man to the world, endorsed by the descendants of the King himself and told from an African perspective. Now, as we enter the third season, we expand that universe of kings and queens, warriors, healers and leaders who have a vision to reinvent an entire culture and establish a legacy that endures more than three centuries later.”

Since its debut, Shaka iLembe has become the most awarded show in South African television history, sweeping 12 SAFTAs and earning acclaim for its costumes, cinematography, soundtrack and authentic depiction of Zulu heritage.

Actress Nomzamo Mbatha, who stars as Queen Nandi, also won Best African Actress at the 2024 Septimius Awards in Amsterdam.

Season three will mark the end of a television event that redefined African storytelling on a global stage, ensuring Shaka’s legend continues to resonate long after the final episode airs.
