DJ Sbu’s Radio 2000 show faces BCCSA probe over alleged bias

DJ Sbu and his Big Breakfast Show co-hosts have come under scrutiny after a listener filed a complaint with the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa (BCCSA).

The popular Radio 2000 trio, Sibusiso “DJ Sbu” Leope, Nathi Ndamase, and Lelo Mzaca were accused of promoting personal religious and political views during their morning broadcasts.

According to reports, one listener took issue with Nathi Ndamase’s on-air habit of reading Bible verses, arguing that it showed bias towards Christianity.

The complaint stated: “I’m a regular listener of Radio 2000, and I have a concern about Nathi Ndamase reading biblical scriptures on the show and preaching. South Africa has many religions, so one religion cannot be given preference over the others. It’s discrimination because others are not given a platform. Nathi must keep her religion to herself.”

In response, Ndamase firmly defended her actions and refused to back down.

“I’m not going to apologise for reading scripture, for loving my God and sharing the Word.”

The controversy deepened when another listener accused DJ Sbu and Lelo Mzaca of showing favoritism towards the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.

The complaint, which was read on air by DJ Sbu himself, claimed the presenters were using the platform to promote certain political views.

Mzaca reportedly dismissed the allegations and demanded evidence to support them, while DJ Sbu maintained that the team understood their responsibility as public broadcasters.

“We know that we need to remain neutral on political views,” he said. “I don’t remember an instance where we gave favour to one party over another. And we would never campaign for any political party, that would be irresponsible.”

The BCCSA has since launched an investigation into the matter to determine whether the team breached broadcasting regulations.
