Eastern Cape mourns visionary promoter Volo Da Saint after fatal Durban crash

The Eastern Cape entertainment scene has been plunged into mourning following the tragic death of Nkokheli “Volo Da Saint” Twabu, who lost his life in a car accident near King Shaka International Airport in Durban on Sunday morning.

In a statement released on Monday, his family expressed their devastation, asking the public to allow them time and privacy as they navigate the shock of his passing.

“As we process and mourn his death, we request your prayers, consideration, and space. We know Volo shared his life with many people: friends, supporters, and fans,” they shared.

Messages of grief and admiration have poured in across social media, with many celebrating his tremendous impact on the Eastern Cape’s creative landscape.

Metro FM award-winning artist Betusile Mcinga described Volo Da Saint as far more than an entertainer, calling him a pillar of pride in the province due to his philanthropic efforts and collaborations aimed at uplifting communities.

His close friend, DJ Mist SA, remembered him as a rare force of nature, bold, visionary, and deeply committed to transformation.

“You lived a full and purposeful life. You were a visionary and an exceptional risk-taker,” he wrote.

He highlighted how uncommon it was for someone to invest so heavily in a rural area, acknowledging the financial risks but applauding Volo’s determination to elevate Bizana.

“But you were determined to put Bizana on the national map, and you succeeded.”

DJ Mist also praised Volo’s pioneering spirit, noting his role in bringing high-profile artists like AKA, Cassper Nyovest, Kabza De Small, and DJ Maphorisa to their community.

Through his events, Volo created more than 100 temporary jobs annually, boosting tourism and breathing new life into Bizana’s economy.

His influence extended beyond hosting artists. Volo Da Saint was the driving force behind the annual OR Tambo Homage Event, a major December celebration that had grown into one of the region’s most anticipated entertainment fixtures.

This year’s edition, slated for December 23 and featuring Dlala Thukzin, Kelvin Momo, Dumi Mkokstad, Mafikizolo, and Naledi Aphiwe, now stands as part of his enduring legacy.

Tributes continue to underscore the depth of his contribution and the void his passing leaves behind.

“Your name will forever hold a prominent place in the historical records of both Bizana and the Eastern Cape,” DJ Mist SA said.

“Beyond friendship, we shared immense respect for each other, both professionally and artistically.”
