Siya Kolisi set to return to Stormers in 2026

Springbok captain Siya Kolisi is set to return to the Stormers in 2026, a move that is likely to see the two-time Rugby World Cup winner finish his illustrious playing career at the union where it all began.

Kolisi is expected to rejoin the Cape Town-based side in July 2026 on a three-year deal, despite being 35 at the time of his return.

While the contract length may raise eyebrows, the decision has been carefully considered by the Stormers, who see value not only in his on-field contribution but in his leadership and influence off it.

The move is also deeply personal. Following his divorce, Kolisi has been open about his desire to be closer to his children, who attend school in Cape Town.

It is understood that the Bok skipper will take a significant pay cut to make the return possible.

“Siya is a national icon who has such a strong connection to our team and our supporters,” said Stormers CEO Johan le Roux.

“He is also a family man who wants to be there for his children as much as possible. These are values that resonate with our club.”

Kolisi will be part of the Stormers’ long-term “Project 2029”, aimed at developing a new generation of players capable of competing at the highest level in Europe.

Director of rugby John Dobson believes Kolisi’s presence will be invaluable. “Siya will be able to help develop these players and mentor them in a way that nobody else could,” he said.

Reflecting on the move, Kolisi said returning home was about more than rugby.

“My family is in Cape Town, and it is important to me to be close to them. This move gives me the chance to do that while also giving back to the team and fans who made such a big contribution to the player and person I am today.”

While acknowledging his time at the Sharks as “a special part of my journey,” Kolisi said the decision ultimately came down to family, marking a fitting full-circle moment in a remarkable career.
