“Who brought them to Durban?” DJ Tira reacts to Big Nuz praise for putting the city on the map

DJ Tira claims credit for Big Nuz Durban legacy

Legendary South African music group Big Nuz has been praised on social media for their undeniable role in making Durban a cultural hotspot through music and visuals during their peak years.

Photos of the trio were recently shared on X, accompanied by the caption: “The only people who made everyone wish to visit Durban through nothing but music videos … the marketing of Durban was unmatched.”

The post quickly gained traction, with many users agreeing that Big Nuz’s music videos helped define Durban’s party culture and carefree lifestyle.

Fans reminisced about an era when the group’s presence dominated airwaves and screens, with one user noting, “I don’t think we appreciate this era enough. Durban used to be a place for lots of fun and entertainment.”

Big Nuz, made up of the late MampintshaMashesha, and Danger, rose to fame in the mid-2000s and became pioneers of Durban’s mainstream sound.

Their energetic music videos, often shot in the city, showcased beach life, nightlife and township culture, turning Durban into a dream destination for many young South Africans.

However, the nostalgic celebration sparked debate after DJ Tira reacted to the post with a pointed comment: “And who brought them to Durban????”

The Afrotainment boss went on to explain his role in the group’s journey, suggesting that Big Nuz’s career trajectory changed after relocating from Johannesburg.

“They were hustling in JHB trying some kwaito/hip hop sound. When they touched down in Durban… Durban was never the same,” he wrote.

While some social media users felt DJ Tira was inserting himself unnecessarily into a conversation about Big Nuz’s talent, many others came to his defence and credited him for his contribution to the group’s success.

“One and only, Makoya Bearings!!! I remember meeting amajita ‘Big Nuz’ hustling in JHB. Big up to you Tira, you did great work with these boys. My wish is to see their legacy live forever,” one user commented.

Others, however, pushed back, arguing that the original post was about the group’s artistry rather than behind-the-scenes influence.

“He’s talking about their talent, not behind the scenes. Don’t include yourself in everything, Makoya,” one critic wrote.
