Bellarmine Mugabe arrested after shooting at a security guard

The youngest son of late former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe has been arrested in Johannesburg following a reported shooting at a luxury home in Hyde Park.

South African police confirmed that two people were detained for questioning as they investigate a case of attempted murder.

Among those taken into custody is Bellarmine Mugabe who is believed to be in his late twenties.

According to authorities a 23 year old man believed to be a gardener or security guard was shot during the incident.

The victim was rushed to hospital and is said to be in a critical condition.

Police spokesperson Col Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi told the BBC that officers are still piecing together what happened.

Investigators remain at the Hyde Park property where the shooting allegedly took place and are searching for a firearm.

While police have not officially named Bellarmine Mugabe as a suspect reporters at the scene said they saw him in handcuffs.

His name has since circulated widely in local media reports.

Earlier a man who identified himself as “Batista” and claimed to be part of the family’s private security team told the SABC that he received a call asking for assistance at the property.

He also expressed frustration after he was denied access to the Hyde Park residence.

Bellarmine Mugabe is the youngest child of Robert Mugabe and his second wife Grace Mugabe.

The former Zimbabwean leader ruled the country for 37 years before being forced to resign in 2017. He died in 2019 at the age of 95.

Police say investigations are ongoing as they work to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting.
