Edwin Sodi ordered to repay over R500,000 to Nedbank amid mounting financial pressure

Edwin Sodi in more financial troubles

Controversial South African businessman Edwin Sodi is facing intensified financial and legal scrutiny after the Johannesburg High Court reportedly ordered him to repay more than R500,000 to Nedbank for unpaid luxury spending.

According to a report by Sunday Times/TimesLive on 8 March 2026, the court granted a default judgment against Sodi after he allegedly failed to settle debts linked to credit card transactions and an overdraft facility.

Court documents indicate that the total outstanding amount is approximately R570,000, accumulated through high-end purchases between 2023 and 2024.

Bank records cited in the article show a pattern of extravagant spending, including R18,000-a-night hotel stays in London, clothing purchases worth around R40,000 at Louis Vuitton, and additional transactions from international retailers and luxury online marketplaces.

The case has reportedly been complicated by challenges in serving Sodi with legal papers.

Sheriffs struggled to locate him to formally deliver court summonses since last year, delaying proceedings and raising questions about his availability to respond to the claims.

This ruling adds to a growing list of legal battles for the businessman.

Sodi is also among the accused in the R255-million Free State asbestos removal tender corruption case, where he has pleaded not guilty to charges including fraud, corruption, and money laundering.

His financial pressures have mounted further in recent months.

One of his companies, NJR Projects later renamed the G5 Group was liquidated by a creditor over unpaid debts, and another court order reportedly required him to pay R50 million to an insurance company.

Despite the mounting scrutiny, Sodi has continued to maintain a high-profile lifestyle, reportedly keeping luxury properties and vehicles.

However, with multiple court actions now against him, the businessman faces increasing pressure, and enforcement measures may include asset seizures to recover the outstanding amounts.
