Actor Thobani Dlomo Nzuza returns to theatre after 7 years

Thobani Dlomo Nzuza takes Boy Ntulikazi back to the stage

South African actor Thobani Dlomo Nzuza is making a heartfelt return to his roots after seven years on television, announcing his comeback to the theatre stage with a powerful production.

Taking to Instagram, the multi-talented performer shared an emotional post reflecting on his journey and the early days of his career, revealing that theatre is where it all began for him.

“After 7 years on television… I am finally coming back to the stage. Theatre is where it all began for me,” he wrote.

The actor looked back on his humble beginnings in 2016 and 2017, when he travelled across the country performing in a play with little more than passion and determination.

“I had no institutional support, no big sponsors, only faith, courage, and people who believed in me when I was still a nobody,” he shared.

Nzuza also paid tribute to key figures who supported him during that time, including Reggie Mampensela Ndlovu, who helped him get to an audition at the Zabalaza Theatre Festival, and Menzi Mkhwane, who rallied support on social media to help fund his trip to Cape Town.

Thanks to that support, he went on to achieve major success at the festival.

“Because of that love and support… we went to the festival and won Best Production and Best Actor. Those moments changed my life,” he said.

Now, years later, the actor says his passion for storytelling remains just as strong, as he prepares to return to the stage not only as a performer but as someone deeply appreciative of the journey.

His comeback production is the multi-award-winning play Boy Ntulikazi, presented by Ubutainment Arts.

SThe production has enjoyed widespread success and has even been introduced in classrooms as a published textbook.

The play, written by Thobani Nzuza and Kagiso Tshimakwane, will be performed by Nzuza himself, with music by Hloniphani Mthethwa.

The production is set to take place at Seabrooke’s Theatre, Durban High School from 1 to 3 May 2026.

Inviting fans and supporters to be part of the moment, Nzuza described the upcoming shows as a celebration of dreams, resilience and the power of community support.

“If you have ever believed in a dream… if you have ever supported a young artist… if you have ever loved theatre… this one is for you,” he said.
