Dating is not easy. Sometimes, you meet someone who seems perfect for you, only to find out that they are not who they claim to be, or that they have a hidden agenda.
Sometimes, you have a great connection with someone, only to be betrayed or abandoned by them. Sometimes, you have a terrible experience that makes you wonder why did you even bother.
These are some of the stories of people who had nightmare first dates that they will never forget.
1. My date was living a double life
“I met this guy online and we agreed to go out for dinner. He seemed nice and funny, so I was looking forward to it. The conversation was good and it really felt like this was going to go somewhere where all my other romantic prospects had ended in failed talking stages. Famous last words indeed. After our first meal, the night dissolved into a comedy of errors that I was only an audience to. Firstly, my date’s phone kept buzzing continuously and when I asked him if he had something urgent he waved it off. About half an hour after that, A woman walked in with a toddler, looked my date straight in the eye, placed the baby down on a seat next to him, and walked right out. Interesting that my date had failed to mention to me that he had a child or another woman in his life. I did not know whether to laugh hysterically or cry. Reader, I did neither. Instead, the baby my date, and I just looked at each other in dumbfounded silence. The child was so confused it almost prompted laughter from me. Almost. Safe to say I did not stay long after that. After paying my share of the meal, I walked right out and did not look back.”
2. My first date blew a hole in my wallet
“I went on a blind date via an app that facilitated such meetings. She was pretty and smart, and we had a lot in common. We had a great time at the movie theater, and then we decided to go for dinner at an upscale seafood place. Everything was going well until we ordered food and lord have mercy I should have just left then. She ordered enough to feed a small army and the drinks kept coming. I was concerned at the growing amount of food and drink so I asked her to slow down but it was like she couldn’t hear me. She went on and in my head, the numbers were crunching. I watched in horrified fascination as she ate everything with ease. It was kind of impressive honestly. After dinner, she excused herself to go to the bathroom as I asked for the bill with dread. When the waiter served me the cheque I almost fell to my knees: the amount would break my bank! I was hoping that my date would agree to split 50/50 at least and waited for her to come back. After an hour had passed and she still wasn’t back, I went over to check on her only to be told by the cleaning staff that there was no one in the ladies’ washroom. I stood there in stunned disbelief as the amount for the meal hit me like a brick as well as the realization that I had just gotten scammed heavily. After paying the hefty sum, and feeling like the greatest loser on the planet, I went straight home deleted the app, and slept for at least seventeen hours.”
3. My first date ended up being someone else’s first date
“I had a crush on this guy from my college class, and I finally got the courage to ask him out. He said yes, and I was over the moon. I planned a romantic picnic at the park, with flowers, wine, and cheese. I thought it was perfect. But when I got there, he was already talking to a girl who I recognized from the English department. From afar they looked quite cozy with each other and like…they were almost flirting? I went over and he looked like he was caught off guard…like forgot-I-had-a-date off-guard and it was so clear on his face that I just wanted to run in the opposite direction. But instead, I powered through that instinct and asked him if he was still up for the date. He said yes but also added a request for the girl he was talking to, to join us? I was so surprised, I was struck dumb. Needless to say, the three of us were on a date for a good forty-five minutes before I could take it no more and left with my unopened bottle of wine and uneaten food. They hardly noticed, they were so into each other. As for how first dates go, it was quite horrible.”
4. He was a conman pretending to be a doctor
“I matched with this guy on a dating app and we hit it off. He was handsome and charming, and he said he was a doctor. He invited me to his place for dinner, and I agreed. I was impressed by his apartment and his cooking skills. He seemed like a catch. But then, he started to act weird. He kept asking me personal questions, like how much money I made, where I lived, and if I had any family. He also kept touching me and trying to kiss me, even though I told him to stop. I felt uncomfortable and scared. I made an excuse and tried to leave, but he blocked the door. He said he wasn’t going to let me go until I answered his questions. It freaked me out and I screamed and pushed him away. I ran for my life out of his apartment and called the police. When the police came knocking, I found out he was not a doctor, but a con artist who had scammed and assaulted many women before me.”
5. I almost got my date killed
“I had a date with this girl I met on a dating app. She was cute and funny, and we had a lot of things in common. We decided to go to a Thai restaurant for dinner. I love Thai food, and she said excited to try out a cuisine she hadn’t before. We ordered some dishes and conversation flowed as the drinks arrived. Everything was going well until she suddenly started to cough and wheeze. She said she felt like her throat was closing up. She said she was allergic to peanuts, and that she had eaten something that had peanuts in it. I immediately panicked and called for help. The waiter came and said that most of the dishes had peanuts in them and that it was written on the menu. I looked at the menu and saw that he was right. I felt so stupid and guilty. I didn’t check the menu for allergens, and I didn’t ask her if she had any allergies. I almost killed her. She was rushed to the hospital, and I followed her. She was given an epinephrine shot and recovered. She said it was not my fault, but I knew it was. I apologized profusely and offered to pay for her medical bills. She said no, and thanked me for being there for her. Despite the incident, she said she had a good time and that she wanted to see me again, but I knew she was just being polite. I knew I had ruined our date and any chance of a second one. ”
