Shudufhadzo Musida, known affectionately as Shudu, former Miss South Africa and a renowned advocate for mental health, recently made headlines with her stunning appearance at the Durban July 2024.

The annual horse racing event is as much about fashion as it is about the races, and Shudu’s outfit this year sparked controversy as it didn’t match the theme – Ride the Wave.

Taking to social media, Shudu shared insights into her choice of dress, as she’s been crucified by critics on social media for not following the theme.

“Fashion is not just a form of art but a language that has shaped and defined various eras of human history, offering us a glimpse into their narratives and dialogues.”

“I was so excited to attend my first Durban July in such a powerful garment by one of my favourite designers, Mzukisi Mbane from IMPRINTZA, to raise awareness around #ForeverWena at one of South Africa’s most anticipated social events by repurposing signage used at the #ForeverWena student rallies to help drive HIV awareness at scale.”

“My dress represents freedom of choice and our autonomy, especially in our interactions. Options are available to ensure we all make the right choices to protect ourselves and others,” she explains.
