Makhadzi to learn sign language

Makhadzi has been encouraged by the deaf community to learn the sign language.

The Venda pop singer offended the deaf community weeks ago after making inappropriate sign language gestures in her new music video titled Jealous Down; she apologised and said she didn’t mean to hurt anyone.

Chairwoman of the Neema Foundation for the Deaf, Itumeleng Motaung noted the singer’s apology and urged her to engage with the community to further celebrate diversity.

“While we note the media reports about her apology, this incident couldn’t have come at a worse time, as we are commemorating Deaf Awareness Month. Makhadzi’s actions unfortunately appeared to mock an integral part of the deaf community. We believe this unfortunate incident presents an opportunity for growth and learning.

“We urge her to use this moment to engage with the deaf community and gain a deeper understanding of South African Sign Language and Deaf culture. We think by extending this offer, Makhadzi will see an opportunity to use the platform to celebrate diversity and inclusivity, setting an example for others fostering greater understanding and respect for the deaf community,” Motaung said.
