Scammers who used AI-generated images of Brad Pitt to defraud a French woman of $850,000 were revealed to be based in Nigeria.
A French woman who lost her life savings to scammers pretending to be American actor Brad Pitt is seeking to unmask at least three Nigerians her legal team accuses of defrauding her.
The scammer claimed that he needed money to pay for kidney treatment, and that his bank accounts were frozen due to his divorce from Angelina Jolie.
The scammers tricked the victim, identified as 53-year-old Anne by French broadcaster TF1, into believing she was in a romantic relationship with the 61-year-old Hollywood star by using AI-generated photos.
The report about the scam made it to the socials and garnered tons of reactions.
An online user wrote, “The actions of a few scammers should not define an entire nation. While the Brad Pitt scam is unfortunate, cybercrime is a global issue, not unique to Nigeria. Millions of Nigerians are honest, hardworking individuals excelling in various fields worldwide. The Nigerian government, through agencies like the EFCC, is actively combating cybercrime. Instead of perpetuating stereotypes, global cooperation and education on online safety are key to addressing such issues effectively.”
Another wrote, “Asian scammers were recently bursted in Nigeria . not all scammers from Nigeria are Nigerians.”
A tweep commented, “If I was a Nigerian, these people would have made me not to be a proud Nigerian. The country is bewitched. Why is it only known for bad things. It would take Nigeria over 100 years to purify its rotten reputation.”
