South African billionaire Douw Steyn, known for his impact in the insurance and property sectors, has passed away at 72.

Born in Brits, Steyn built a fortune with Auto & General Insurance and expanded his empire internationally through the BGL Group in the UK.

He revolutionized the insurance industry, introducing direct motor insurance sales and pioneering price comparison platforms.

Beyond business, Steyn was deeply committed to South Africa’s development. He invested in Steyn City, a luxury estate, and contributed millions to philanthropy, notably aiding communities in Diepsloot and Cosmo City. His Douw Steyn Family Trust pledged R370 million for COVID-19 relief efforts.

A close friend of Nelson Mandela, Steyn hosted the former president at his Johannesburg home after Mandela’s release, with the property later becoming the Saxon Hotel. Mandela praised Steyn as a visionary who believed in South Africa’s future.

Steyn is survived by his wife, Carolyn, and three children, who continue his legacy in business and philanthropy.
