Shudufhadzo Musida sparks controversy with bold stance against female circumcision

Former Miss South Africa, Shudufhadzo “Shudu” Musida, has vowed to put an end to female genital mutilation (FGM), a practice that involves the cutting or removal of parts of the female genitalia.

While acknowledging the significance of initiation rituals, she is determined to stop this harmful aspect of the tradition.

Announcing her new role as the United Nations Population Fund’s Global Champion for Women and Girls, Shudu expressed her commitment to fighting for gender equality, reproductive health, and the protection of women’s rights.

“FGM is an act of violence against women — a violation of their rights, their dignity, and their bodily autonomy,” she stated. Her campaign comes as the world marks the International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM.

However, her stance has not been welcomed by all. Some cultural activists believe she is undermining a sacred tradition.

A Venda musician argued that initiation is deeply rooted in their identity and that the procedure is not forced but rather a choice. Others maintain that the practice has been safely carried out for generations without complications.
