Solo Sandton restaurant breaks silence over recent shooting
Solo, an upscale restaurant in Sandton, Johannesburg, has addressed the tragic shooting incident that took place outside its premises, leading to the deaths of well-known debt collector and businessman Sphamandla Mabonga and his two bodyguards on Thursday night.
Mabonga, who was previously in a relationship with Real Housewives star Londie London, was among those fatally wounded in the altercation.
The restaurant management confirmed that a security breach occurred, reiterating their commitment to safety.
“On the evening of 6 March, a group of males attempted to forcibly enter our premises while armed,” they stated.
Their security team intervened, preventing unauthorized entry, and the situation escalated, prompting the local community police forum to respond.
“We extend our sincere thoughts and prayers to the innocent parties who were injured during the incident. We wish them a speedy recovery.”
Management assured patrons that operations would soon resume as normal. “We are deeply grateful to everyone who assisted in ensuring the safety of our patrons and staff. We remain committed to providing a secure and enjoyable environment for all our guests. We look forward to welcoming you back to Solo Sandton.”
Mabonga was fatally shot outside the restaurant following a confrontation between his armed bodyguards and the venue’s security personnel.
Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that authorities are investigating cases of murder and attempted murder.
“Police are still investigating a case of murder and attempted murder following a shooting incident that claimed the lives of three people and left four injured at a restaurant in Sandton.”
Two of the bodyguards died at the scene, while five other victims—including Mabonga, two patrons, a community policing forum member, and a security guard—were hospitalized with gunshot wounds.
“The man succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man who started this gunfight had previously been arrested for a shooting incident, also in Sandton, last year.”
