Sis Maria faces backlash for seeking financial help
Popular TikTok comedian Thato Joseph Mashifane, widely known as Sis Maria, has withdrawn his public appeal for financial help after facing criticism.
The social media star, who has gained 1.8 million followers for his hilarious skits, initially reached out to fans for support in settling outstanding car payments.
In a now-deleted Facebook post, Mashifane disclosed that he needed R26,000 to cover three months’ worth of arrears, including collection and storage fees, to prevent his car from being auctioned.
“I tried getting help from the company I work with, but they are taking time to give me feedback which gives me no comfort,” he shared.
“I have until April 5 before the car could be sold to an auction. My balance is R93,000, but I need R26,000 to bail it out. If I settle this, I can continue paying my monthly instalments.”
Despite opening up about his struggles and sharing banking details for contributions, the plea was met with mixed reactions.
Following the backlash, Mashifane decided to take down the post and announced that he no longer needed financial assistance.
“I had people advising me on how to deal with my problem, which resulted in me deleting the post,” he explained in a Facebook video. “I was looking for help but not anymore. If there’s anyone who’ll be sending the same message, just know it’s not me.”
He also dismissed speculation that his manager was responsible for his financial troubles, defending him against criticism.
“My manager has nothing to do with this. He has been my guideline since the beginning. I have made a lot of mistakes that I’m still learning, but he has been good. Hands off my manager, please. He doesn’t deserve what you are saying about him.”
Mashifane assured his followers that he would refund those who had already contributed.
Reflecting on his journey, he shared that before finding success in comedy, he had pursued a music career while working as a security guard.
Looking ahead, he remains focused on creating content and teased new projects. “Let’s move forward and continue creating content for people to enjoy. Music is also coming this year; there’s a lot of things coming.”
