How to soundproof your home from generator & external noise

Soundproofing your home from generator and external noise can make a huge difference in comfort, especially in areas where load shedding and neighborhood generators are common.

Here’s a practical guide tailored for South African homes:

1. Seal doors and windows

Noise often enters through small gaps and cracks. Use weatherstripping or rubber seals around door and window frames to block sound leaks. Install door sweeps to prevent noise from coming in underneath doors. Acoustic caulk can also be applied to seal any gaps or joints.

2. Use thick curtains or soundproof drapes

Heavy fabrics help absorb sound waves. Installing acoustic or blackout curtains can significantly reduce noise from outside. For greater effectiveness, use double layers or combine with standard curtains.

3. Upgrade your windows

Standard single-pane windows are poor sound barriers. Consider installing double-glazed windows, which provide better insulation. If replacement isn’t feasible, soundproof inserts or acrylic panels can be mounted on existing windows for similar results.

4. Insulate walls and ceilings

Sound can travel easily through poorly insulated structures. Adding dense insulation materials like mineral wool or cellulose in your walls and ceiling cavities can reduce noise transfer. Installing an extra layer of drywall or using mass loaded vinyl (MLV) can further dampen sound.

5. Add soft furnishings

Rooms with hard surfaces tend to echo and amplify noise. Placing thick rugs or carpets on the floor helps absorb sound. Upholstered furniture, curtains, cushions, and even bookshelves can all act as sound absorbers.

6. Soundproof the generator itself

Controlling noise at the source is often most effective. Position your generator as far away from your home as possible. Place it on anti-vibration pads to reduce ground noise. Use or build a generator enclosure lined with soundproofing material such as MLV or acoustic foam, while ensuring proper ventilation.

7. Use white noise indoors

To mask lingering background noise, use a fan or white noise machine inside your home. Soft background sounds can make external noise less noticeable, especially at night or during work.
