Weapon that killed DJ Sumbody may be tied to Tebogo Thobejane’s attempted murder
DJ Sumbody’s unsolved murder has taken a new turn, as investigators now believe the firearm used in his fatal ambush may be connected to the attempted assassination of actress Tebogo Thobejane.
The startling revelation could tie together two high-profile cases that shook the nation.
The Monate Mpolaye hitmaker, whose real name was Oupa John Sefoka, was gunned down in a hail of bullets in Woodmead, Johannesburg, on 20 November 2022.
Since then, the case has remained cold, with no arrests made, until recent ballistic reports hinted at a possible breakthrough.
According to Sunday World, preliminary forensic results suggest that shell casings found at the crime scene of DJ Sumbody’s killing may match those recovered after a failed hit on Thobejane in October 2023.
The actress narrowly escaped with her life when gunmen opened fire on her vehicle along the N1 highway. She sustained a foot injury, while a friend traveling with her was left paralyzed.
“Ballistic examinations are ongoing, but preliminary results suggest that shell casings recovered from the N1 highway scene where Thobejane narrowly escaped death may match those found at the crime scenes of DJ Sumbody’s fatal ambush,” said a source close to the investigation.
Though no official confirmation has been made, the potential connection between the two attacks has drawn renewed attention to both cases.
Authorities are also considering whether a third shooting, an August 2022 attack on taxi mogul Joe Sibanyoni in Centurion, may share similarities with the other incidents.
Thobejane’s case continues to develop, with her former lover Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala accused of orchestrating the hit.
He and several alleged accomplices are currently in custody as the investigation progresses.
