Glen Gabela pleads for help

Legendary South African actor Glen Gabela has made an emotional public appeal, revealing he is battling depression, financial hardship, and the painful reality of surviving without work.

In a viral video shared online, the veteran performer, best remembered for his role as Pastor Mdletshe in the hit soap Uzalo, tearfully pleaded for assistance, showing a fridge containing only bottles of water.

“I just want a decent life, like everyone else. I want to engage with people and help grow the film industry so upcoming performers don’t end up like us. I want their lives to be better, and I don’t want them to face the same struggles we do,” Gabela said.

“Begging is very difficult for me. I just need help to live a decent life. I don’t need to be rich.”

Gabela revealed to Sunday World that years of unemployment have taken a toll on both his health and well-being.

“I recently had a heart attack and was in hospital for three weeks. Doctors said it was because of stress and depression. I haven’t had any work since 2018 when I was let go from Uzalo, and I can’t even take care of myself.”

With a career spanning decades across TV, theatre, and film, Gabela is now focusing on scriptwriting and production.

“I have over 21 scripts ready for development, but I don’t have the resources. I haven’t formally applied for funding yet, but I’m in talks with business people. Still, what I need most is a job right now. I’m appealing to producers and directors to remember me.”

Currently living in Johannesburg, he says he has been surviving thanks to the kindness of strangers.

“I am really grateful to those who brought me food, it means a lot to me.”
