Crown Gospel Awards make emotional Durban comeback in honor of Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule

Africa’s biggest celebration of gospel music is heading back to where it all began.

The Crown Gospel Music Awards will return to Durban this November, marking a homecoming filled with nostalgia and gratitude for the life and legacy of its late founder, Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule.

The 18th edition of the awards is set for November 23 at the Durban International Convention Centre, with tickets now officially available to the public.

Organisers say this year’s event will be more than a ceremony, it’s a celebration of faith, community and the woman whose vision continues to inspire gospel artists across the continent.

“Durban is home,” said Pastor S’thembiso Mtshali, spokesperson for the Crowns. “We’re excited to be back where it all started, and we’re calling on the public to get their tickets early for what promises to be the biggest gospel gathering in Africa.”

The Crown Gospel Awards, established in 2008, have grown into one of the continent’s most respected faith-based music events.

Each year, the show brings together top gospel musicians, church leaders, media personalities and devoted fans to honour artists who use their voices to uplift and inspire.

Mtshali said this year’s celebration carries extra meaning as it pays tribute to Zanele, who dedicated her life to promoting gospel music and empowering artists through her platform.

“This year will be a heartfelt tribute to her memory as we celebrate in her beloved city of Durban,” he shared. “We know she’s smiling down as we keep her dream alive.”

Organisers have already described the 2025 edition as a milestone year, with a record-breaking 890 submissions received from across the country.

From industry veterans to emerging voices, the competition for the golden crowns is expected to be fierce.

The official list of nominees will be announced at the end of October, and fans are encouraged to follow the Crown Gospel Music Awards’ pages for updates and ticket details.
