Kharishma earns two SAMA nominations days after surviving fatal car accident

Kharishma bags 2 SAMA nods
Limpopo-born musician Kharishma, whose real name is Melita Makoma Ribane, has received two major nominations at the 31st annual South African Music Awards (SAMAs), just days after surviving a tragic car crash.
The Lekompo hitmaker is up for Record of the Year and Music Video of the Year for her chart-topping single Chokeslem, a song that continues to dominate airwaves long after its release.
The nominations come amid a difficult time for the rising star, who was involved in a fatal accident on October 31 at the intersection of Grobler and Magazyn Street.
The crash left her hospitalised and claimed the life of one of her close friends.
Her family confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement, saying:
“The accident has unfortunately claimed the life of one of Kharishma’s friends, leaving the other severely injured, including Kharishma.”
They added that the singer is receiving medical attention and expressed gratitude for the overwhelming love and support from fans during this painful period.
“We thank everyone who has sent well wishes and shown us support during this difficult time,” the statement continued.
Despite her current recovery, Kharishma’s Chokeslem continues to shine. The hit track, which previously won Song of the Year on Thobela FM and Capricorn FM, has now secured her place among South Africa’s most celebrated artists.
She will compete with Makhadzi, Mawhoo, and DJ Maphorisa for Music Video of the Year, while Dlala Thukzin, Tyler ICU, Kelvin Momo, and Kabza De Small join her in the Record of the Year category.
Kharishma’s recognition at the SAMAs cements her growing influence in the music industry, with other viral hits like Wa Inama and Fly High Lekompo proving her consistency as a hitmaker.
The 2025 SAMAs will take place on December 14 in Johannesburg and, according to organisers RiSA, will adopt a hybrid format blending live and digital elements due to ongoing funding challenges.
