Nadia Nakai clears schedule for GBV women’s shutdown

Rapper Nadia Nakai has put her music plans on hold ahead of Friday’s G20 Women’s Shutdown, choosing to stand in solidarity with victims of gender-based violence in South Africa.

The nationwide call, led by advocacy group Women for Change, urges women and girls to turn their social media profile pictures purple and pause all activity for a 15-minute standstill at midday.

The moment is meant to honour the alarming number of women killed every day in the country and push for GBV to be recognised as a national disaster.

Nadia revealed on her timeline that her new single, Really, featuring Nasty C, will no longer drop on the originally planned date.

“I was supposed to drop a new song, Really, featuring Nasty C, on the 21st. This date was chosen a few months ago, but I’m going to move my release date for obvious reasons,” she explained.

She added that her decision comes from a place of principle.

“If you don’t know, just check my profile picture and what I stand for. We as women are not working on Friday. So the song will be released on November 28. I also cancelled my gigs on Friday. Enough is enough.”
