DJ Warras’ family mourn “senseless” killing as chilling details emerge about his final days

DJ Warras’ family release a statement following his passing
The family of Warrick Stock, widely known as DJ Warras, has spoken out following his shocking killing in Johannesburg’s CBD, describing his death as a devastating and unimaginable loss that has left them broken.
In an emotional statement released on Wednesday, the Stock family said they learned of the DJ and media personality’s death with “indescribable heartbreak, deep sorrow, and overwhelming shock,” joining many South Africans who have been left reeling by the news.
DJ Warras, who was 40, was shot and killed on Tuesday, December 16, while leaving a building near the Carlton Centre. Police have confirmed that a suspect approached him shortly after midday, opened fire and fled the scene on foot. No arrests have been made, and the motive for the killing remains unclear as investigations continue.
Adding to the tragedy are emerging reports that DJ Warras had obtained multiple protection orders prior to his death. According to sources, he had secured five protection orders against occupants of the Zambezi Building in Johannesburg’s CBD, with one reportedly granted just last week.
These revelations have raised further questions as police work to piece together the circumstances surrounding the murder.
In their statement, the family described Warrick as far more than a public figure.
“The senseless nature of his passing has left his family devastated, broken, and struggling to imagine a world without him,” they said.
Affectionately known as DJ Warras and also as “The Shady Lurker,” he was remembered as a devoted son, a loving and proud father, and a cherished brother and uncle.
“Warrick was the heart and anchor of his family,” the statement read. “He brought light, laughter, and strength into every space he occupied.”
The family also highlighted his impact beyond his home, noting that his kindness and influence reached friends, colleagues and the wider South African entertainment community, where he was deeply loved and respected as a media personality, activist and businessman.
DJ Warras is survived by his three young children, his mother and his siblings. The family said their lives have been “irrevocably changed” by his death.
As they begin the painful process of mourning, the Stock family appealed for privacy and compassion, while also calling for space for law enforcement to do their work.
“They humbly ask for privacy, compassion, and understanding during this unimaginably difficult time,” the statement said, adding that they respectfully request the South African Police Service be given the support needed “so that justice may be served.”
The family confirmed they are not yet in a position to appoint a spokesperson and asked to be kept in the thoughts and prayers of South Africans during this difficult period.
They also expressed heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support they have received since news of DJ Warras’ death became public.
“Your kindness, compassion, and solidarity have brought moments of comfort during an incredibly dark time,” they said.
Details regarding memorial and funeral arrangements will be shared at a later stage, the family added, concluding their message with “love, gratitude, and broken hearts.”
