Yvonne Chaka Chaka reveals she became a millionaire at 21

Yvonne Chaka Chaka has sparked widespread admiration after revealing that she earned her first million rands at just 21.

The legendary singer made the revelation during a recent podcast appearance, where she reflected on the importance of being financially disciplined early in her career.

Speaking candidly about her journey, Yvonne credited smart decisions and strategic opportunities for her early financial success.

“I must say, at 21 I had a million in my account, thanks to Phil Hollis,” she said, before adding with a touch of humour, “They abused us, but sometimes they were nice.”

She went on to explain that her income extended beyond music, highlighting how diversifying her brand played a major role in building wealth.

“He knew that I was a musician. But I was the first face of dark skin lotion and doing all of those things. I also did a Pepsi ad with Michael Jackson and Tina Turner,” she said, proudly reflecting on the global platforms she accessed early on.

Yvonne also weighed in on live performances, pushing back against the idea that artists of her generation had it easier.

Comparing past shows to today’s concert culture, she remarked, “We filled up Venda Stadium. People came to our shows, and they paid. They were not getting free entry.” She added that what she and the late Brenda Fassie achieved in their prime rivalled, and in her view surpassed, many modern-day milestones.

Beyond the numbers, the veteran artist stressed the importance of respecting money and making it work for you through investment, especially when success comes early.
