Award-winning content creator City Makoti has set social media alight after candidly revealing that she is the primary provider in her household.
The influencer, whose real name is Anika Dambuza, shared a video on TikTok, opening up about her family’s financial dynamics.
In the clip, she questioned why society still treats female financial leadership in marriage as taboo.
“Why does talking about being the female breadwinner make people so uncomfortable? It’s automatically seen as something that will bruise a man’s ego,” she said.
City Makoti argued that many women feel pressured to downplay or even conceal their financial contributions to protect their partners’ pride.
“A lot of women keep quiet or lie about who the real breadwinner is to protect egos, but a confident man is not embarrassed by his partner’s success, and he’s secure enough in his masculinity to stand beside her and not compete with her.”
Her remarks divided opinion online; some critics felt that such personal details should remain private, while others applauded her honesty, saying her reality reflects that of many South African women.
“Sihle is always so supportive of me, and I wouldn’t have been able to do anything that I’ve done without him,” she shared.
She stressed that financial contribution does not determine leadership within a home.
According to her, respect and partnership matter more than income, adding that her husband remains the head of their household, leading with love and emotional intelligence while building his own career.
