Oskido reflects on Order of Ikhamanga honour: “This honour belongs to all of us”
Oskido receives one of South Africa’s highest honours from President Ramaphosa
Veteran DJ, producer and entrepreneur Oskido has expressed gratitude after receiving one of South Africa’s highest civilian honours.
The kwaito pioneer recently shared a heartfelt message on social media reflecting on being awarded the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver, an honour bestowed by President Cyril Ramaphosa during the National Orders Investiture Ceremony held on 19 May 2026.
More than a week after receiving the prestigious recognition, Oskido returned to social media to acknowledge the people who have supported him throughout his career.
“To God be the glory. 🙏🏽 Thank you for walking this journey with me. This honour belongs to all of us,” he wrote.
The award recognises his immense contribution to South African music and his role in creating opportunities for young artists over the years.
According to the official citation, Oskido was honoured “for creating opportunities for young musicians as an extension of his own success as a DJ, record producer, entrepreneur and kwaito pioneer.”
Widely regarded as one of the architects of modern South African music, Oskido helped shape the kwaito movement and later became a key figure in nurturing emerging talent through Kalawa Jazmee Records.
The influential label played a major role in launching and developing the careers of several stars, including Mafikizolo, Boom Shaka and Black Coffee.
Following the investiture ceremony, Oskido also emphasised that the recognition was not solely his achievement, dedicating the honour to fellow pioneers who helped build the foundation of the kwaito genre and South Africa’s music industry.
