London could move to a tighter Covid-19 lockdown from Friday midnight as Prime Minister Boris Johnson tries to curb the accelerating second wave of the coronavirus.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock is expected to address the parliament at around 10.30 GMT on Thursday.
He is to announce changes to the government’s patchwork of three-tier local lockdowns.
London’s mayor Sadiq Khan said he expects the government will announce later on Thursday that London will shortly move to stricter lockdown restrictions.
“It is my expectation that the government will today announce that London will shortly be moving into tier 2 or the high alert level of restrictions,” Khan said.
He said no one expects this move but action is required to tackle the virus.
“I must warn Londoners: We’ve got a difficult winter ahead.”
