7 ways to take back your power from toxic in-laws

Having toxic-in-laws is not very uncommon. In fact, many people face the wrath of their in-laws in their married life, and then it all turns out to be a big issue.

Usually, in families, daughters-in-law suffer a lot at the hands of their in-laws and after the subtle taunts, and constant fights, they begin doubting themselves too much.


Their confidence falls through and they are unable to stand up for themselves in front of their in-laws. In most cases, their partners aren’t able to help them, as they should.

And so, here listed are some ways to take back your power from such toxic in-laws.

1. Don’t entertain their gossips

Toxic in-laws like gossiping about other people, especially when there’s misery and controversies around. Don’t listen to them or engage in such conversations that drain out your energy.

2. Don’t work on pleasing them

Stop treating your in-laws like they are the centre of your universe. The more importance you give to them, the more they will try to take advantage of you. Toxic in-laws thrive from seeing their daughters-in-law or sons-in-law trying to please them.

3. Be confident

You will have to start prioritising yourself. First of all, stop doubting yourself. Don’t think that you are too sensitive or you are overreacting when your in-laws try to be irritating, demanding or disrespectful. Stand your ground.

4. Stand strong

You have to be thick-skinned and strong, every time your in-laws try to put you down. Whether it’s all about giving them the attention they crave, don’t give in.

5. Learn to forget

If you are someone who doesn’t like conflict, then it’s best to forgive and forget. Look for other solutions like: consider shifting to a separate home where you and your partner can stay separately or draw daily boundaries between you and your in-laws.

6. Shift your focus

The less you engage with your in-laws, the less they will be able to hold power over you. If you start focusing on new hobbies and other work, then you can spend more time on these, instead of being around your in-laws’ negative energy.

7. Manipulate your in-laws

If nothing works against your in-laws, you can try manipulating them the way they try to do it to you. You can take your time understanding and analysing your in-laws’ manipulation methods, and then try it on them.
