The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), announced on Wednesday 22 July, that there will be double payment of R350 grant this week.

The double payments are for those that did not get paid in June and July. According to them, those that qualify will receive double payment of R700 by the end of the month.

“This is meant to avoid a situation where beneficiaries of the COVID-19 social relief of distress grant have to make two trips to the Post Office and to eradicate the backlog of payments. The move was met with much appreciation and excitement on social media this morning,” it said.

SASSA has started payments of the double grants for those with bank accounts while those without bank accounts will receive their money through the post office. This will be done progressively throughout the month to try and limit the number of people at the post offices on a daily basis.

“Beneficiaries are reminded that they should only visit the post office once they have received an SMS saying their money has been paid in and is ready for collection,” it said.

SASSA also said it reconsidered applications made in May due to updated databases which were received and over one million applicants were approved for the R350 grant.

“This will drastically reduce the number of potential appeals and will also cushion the affected beneficiaries against the current impact of the lockdown,” it added.

SASSA announced on Wednesday that it has received over 7.8 million applications for the R350 grant.

“Of this number, we have approved over 4 million applications to whom just over one R17,000,000 will be disbursed,” it said.
